The cause of death is still unclear, with Austy Coffey stating that it could have been due to a wide range of causes, however he speculates a fatal snake bite was most likely.

The star racehorse was said to be in good health after being fed on the Saturday morning prior to the incident.

Vianden made 40 starts in its career, with nine wins including the Mt Wycheproof and Nhill Cups. Harry Coffey rode in seven of those wins.

Austy Coffey says it was a sad occurrence for the whole family.

"He was very good to us," Coffey said.

"We got a lot of joy out of him so it was a real shame."
