Pay dispute leads to lines being affected before Christmas

The Swan Hill and Bendigo lines will be two of the regional train lines impacted by the the disruptions that may occur leading up to Christmas by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union over a pay dispute.

V/Line drivers, station staff and train controllers have voted to take industrial action as they seek a 6 percent annual pay rise over three years.

On Tuesday, the union announced the industrial action will start on the regional train services from Wednesday December 11 and end on December 20.

RTBU Victorian Secretary Luba Grigorovitch said they doesn't want to be holding rolling strikes across the V/Line network but believe it’s necessary.

The Shadow Minister for Regional Pubic Transport Steph Ryan has criticised the Andrews Government for their lack of action, saying that regional passengers already deal with enough delays and cancellations.

"Regional passengers deserve to be able to go about their lives and enjoy the holidays without being stuck in the middle of this ugly dispute..." says Ryan.

Those sentiments were also echoed by Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh;

“The Andrews Government has one job – to make sure the trains run on time, but every day there’s a new problem that makes our trains less reliable,” Mr Walsh said.

Due to the planned industrial action, no trains will run on the following dates and lines:

Wednesday 11 Dec: Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines
Thursday 12 Dec: Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines
Tuesday 17 Dec: Gippsland line
Wednesday 18 Dec: Seymour, Shepparton and Albury lines
Thursday 19 Dec: Geelong and Warrnambool lines

Coaches will replace trains. V/Line is advising passengers to allow up to an extra 60 minutes for their journey.
