Police pleased with behaviour following long weekend

Local police were pleased with behaviour over the Australia Day long weekend.

Starting last Friday, Operation Amity was run by Victoria Police through Australia Day, focusing on impaired driving, speeding, fatigue and mobile phone use.

Swan Hill Acting Inspector Brad Bennett says police were impressed with the behaviour displayed by locals,

"We were very quiet on the roads and in regards to Australia Day celebrations, we were very impressed with the way people conducted themselves in this area."

Statewide for Victoria Police, they detected 3865 traffic offences with 130 drink drivers and 136 drug drivers caught.

Six lives were lost on the roads over the long weekend.

Bennett says it's important that good behaviour isn't isolated to just long weekends or special operations,

"We want that to happen all year round, obviously. One life lost is too many and it impacts so many people.

"We really urge people to take care on the roads and take their time.

"Be courteous to each other. It doesn't take much to show a bit of courtesy and a bit of patience."
