Scammers target residents ahead of tax season

Ahead of tax time, local workers in the Mallee are being warned about cyber criminals seeking to cash in or steal their personal information.

It comes as a new survey from cyber security company Norton, reveals that more than 2 in 5 working Australians (42%) have been targeted by scammers who claim to be from the tax office.

Despite that, Mark Gorrie from Norton LifeLock says many people are still taking significant risks when online.

World No Tobacco Day

Today is World No Tobacco Day (31 May) with young people across the Mallee being reminded of the many dangers associated with smoking.

It comes as the latest Australian Secondary Students' Alcohol and Drug (ASSAD) survey shows a reduction in teenage smoking rates across Australia, but a recent increase in the proportion of teens who are using roll-your-own tobacco products.

Anita Dessaix from the Cancer Council says it's important local teens realise that all forms of smoking are poisonous and should be avoided.

Road toll rising on Victorian roads

The road toll has been a focus for Swan Hill Police and the state of Victoria.

Current figures from the Road Fatality Review Panel, state that 137 lives have been lost on roads this year, up almost 56% from last year.

Senior Sergeant Brad Bennett from Swan Hill Police advised caution when travelling on rural roads.

Nyah bridge lift scheduled

The Murray River Council will be completing a maintenance bridge lift from June 5 in Nyah.

According to the report, the Nyah bridge lifts will take place at 9:30am and 2:30pm. A bridge lift noted to take approximately 30 minutes to complete an up and down cycle, not taking into consideration any potential problems.

Golden Rivers Football League Round Seven preview

Wandella will face Nullawil in Round Seven of the Golden Rivers Football League at the weekend.
