Climate change could cost Mallee community

A new report confirms the cost of climate change for the Mallee community, including a likely hit to property values and reduced agricultural output.

It estimates the increasing frequency of droughts could wipe 1% off Australia's Gross Domestic Product each year, with industries including wheat, cotton, rice and dairy likely to be hardest hit.

The Climate Council's Professor Will Steffen said the costs of climate change will continue to mount, particularly for communities in the Murray region.

AEC reminds voters to follow instructions when voting in Federal Election

With early voting open, residents in the Mallee are being reminded to take extra care to make sure their vote counts in the Federal Election.

Voters will be given a green ballot paper for the House of Representatives and a white ballot paper for the Senate.

Evan Ekin-Smyth from the Australian Electoral Commission is warning voters not to make any assumptions and ensure they read and follow the instructions carefully.

Arrests following CFA thefts

Following the arrest of two men in relation to a burglary and theft at the Swan Hill CFA, the Swan Hill Police have praised the work of the community in assisting in the arrests.

A 21-year-old Swan Hill man was arrested in relation to the burglary and theft. He was also charged in relation to numerous theft from motor vehicles and deception offences. He has been remanded in custody.

In addition, a 27-year-old Swan Hill man was also arrested in connection to the matter, he has been charged and bailed to attend court at a later date.

Acting Inspector Brad Bennett said that the community plays a large part in the assisting police.

Recent rainfall helps farmers

With the recent rainfall across the Mallee, farmers have received much needed relief from the drought.

With Swan Hill receiving 16mm over the weekend and a total of 43mm of rainfall over the month of May, this after only receiving a total of 19mm from January to April.

Southern Panel Member for the Grains Research and Development Corporation Rohan Mott said that the rainfall has been a long time coming but it is appreciated.

Central Murray Football League Round 4 Review

In Round 4 of the Central Murray Football League, Woorinen pulled of a come from behind victory over Mallee Eagles on Saturday.

The Eagles came out and outscored their opposition 33 - 15 in the third to take a 11-point lead into the final change.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, they could not hold on, with Woorinen climbing their way back on top for an 11-point win 72 - 61.

For Woorinen, Jose Miliado led the way, kicking three goals five.

In other results, Koondrook/Barham defeated Lake Boga 111 - 10, Tyntynder took a close one over Kerang 68 - 51, Nyah Nyah West United fell to Cohuna Kangas 149 - 69, and Tooleybuc Manangtang took a seven point win over Balranald 74 - 67

Central Murray Football League Round 4 Review

Nullwil has defeated Moulamein by 23 points in Round 5 of the Golden Rivers Football League at the weekend, with a final score of 98 - 75.

Nullawil held the lead throughout the game, with Phillip Lobb top scoring for the side, kicking four goals five.

In other results, Wandella defeated Macorna 144 - 7, Hay took the win over Quambatook 115 - 76 and Ultima won over Murrabit 85 - 39.
