Finke Fundraiser for Mallee Legend

Following a decade of remission, local legend Sean Ewart is celebrating in his own unique way.

Ewart is taking on one of the world’s most difficult races; the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs in June, and all for a cause special to his heart.

After being diagnosed at 16 with acute myeloid leukemia, Ewart received two separate double stem cell transplants in order to battle the rare disease, and throughout the process got financial and emotional support from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Now Ewart is looking to return the favour, as he aims to raise $10,000 to help anyone else who must suffer through what he did.

“They helped me out so much, that’s why I’m driven to do this,” Ewart said.

And as for why he chose such a gruelling challenge for his big fundraiser?

“It’s been on my bucket list for a while; I’ve always loved riding bikes so this was something I always wanted to do.”

“I’ve learned not to take life for granted, it’ll go too quick.”

His training is now well and truly underway; ahead of Ewart lies almost 460kms of rugged terrain in a highly remote setting.

He remains optimistic however he’ll be ready for the challenge.

“I’ve been going to the gym at Voyage Fitness almost every day, and riding any chance I can; it’s been tough but you just have to keep training.”

"I've been feeling good, it's something I can handle."

The Finke Desert Race will begin on June 7, with the full event taking place across four days.
