National Volunteer Week running this week

Yesterday saw the start of National Volunteer Week for 2020.

The Country Fire Authority are one of many organisations celebrating the contributions made by their over 55,000 operational, non-operational and junior volunteers.

CFA Chief Officer and CEO Steve Warrington said this year has been like no other and the contributions from our volunteer have been remarkable.

“I want to take this opportunity to say, thank you to each and every one of our volunteers.

“The 2019-20 fire season will go down in history as one of the most extensive bushfire seasons we have faced.

One local volunteer is Captain James White, who has 16 years of service between the Frankston and Lake Boga fire brigades.

He was also part of four deployments this fire season to the Omeo area and to New South Wales.

"Whilst some people may think volunteering is about you giving everything, what it gives back to you is massive," says White.

"You learn a lot of skills, I've learnt a lot of skills over the years in leadership and different skills that I wouldn't have necessarily learnt anywhere else."

James encourages others to get involved.

"Generally, we'd ask people to come down and have a meet and greet at your local station et cetera, but given the current COVID-19 restrictions that's not possible at this stage.

"My advice is to get on the CFA website, register your interest and a representative will get back to you."
